Window Update
posted 11:39 AM Wednesday, October 01, 2008 by rsteinm2
There have been no new updates to report on from the architecture team in regards to the placement of the windows. The decision appears to be down to using high-tech windows from Optiwin or cheaper windows from Pella which are available locally.
The next step in this study should be to perform an energy use analysis of the house with the two types of windows to see if the additional cost of the better performing windows is truly worth it. I performed a simple calculation using the two windows' R-values to estimate heat flow with a 20degF difference in indoor/outdoor temperature. Disregarding many variables including radiant heat, the heat flow through the Pella windows was over twice that of the Optiwin windows. Advanced modeling software should be used to obtain more accurate results.
